Anna Maria Island – Beach goers can expect lots of sunshine and smiles if you’re celebrating this Memorial Day weekend on beautiful Anna Maria Island. The newly re-nourished beach promises to be the idyllic backdrop to your vacation. Check out some of the local festivities in this blog for a perfect way to start your summer this holiday!
Kick off your three day weekend with a classic beach day on the gulf coast. The powder white sand is perfect for beach volleyball or throwing a football with the family. If you’re vacationing as a couple and want to cruise the open water then renting a tandem kayak from Fun & More Rentals made for two is perfect for you; or if you’re flying solo a paddleboard is your key for skimming the sea. Keep our shelled and our feathered friends in mind during your beach day since it is Sea Turtle and Shore Bird nesting season – so be careful when planting your umbrella in the sand and keep away from areas roped off in caution tape as they are protected by federal law. Finish off your day and join the locals on the city pier where you can fish, eat, escape the heat and enjoy the fantastic bay views.
Join the privateers on Saturday for their Island Pub Crawl at 2pm where their Skullywag Privateers parade ship will set sail to D Coy Ducks and coast its way to all the best Island stops before docking at the Drift In on Bridge Street. On Sunday morning get all your breakfast groceries and other island trinkets at the local Coquina Beach market (2650 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach) until 4pm. If you want to finish off your holiday by venturing off the island and enjoying the city there is a Memorial Day “Tribute to Heroes” parade on Lakewood Ranch Main Street that begins at 5pm. Attendees can enjoy live music, children’s activities, food, beverages, veteran readings, VIP seating for veterans, and of course the parade at 6pm that includes a symbolic white dove release. Make sure to bring a donation item if you have one handy and it will be contributed to care packages that are being organized for the troops!
With so many island activities there is fun to be had by everyone, whether it is indoors or out. Check out some of our other blogs for more ideas on our favorite vacation pass times and events. Remember, three day weekends don’t come around too often so take advantage of this one on Anna Maria Island.
