Winter Weather on Anna Maria Island: December, January & February

If you're escaping snow, ice and freezing temperatures farther north, an Anna Maria Island winter can feel like a very welcome change of scenery.

December

December has an average high around 75°F and an average low around 55°F. You'll often find comfortable conditions for walking the beach, biking, exploring the island and enjoying outdoor dining.

You'll want more than swimsuits in your suitcase, though. Cooler mornings, evenings and occasional cold fronts make a light jacket or sweater a good idea.

January

January is typically the coolest month of the year, with an average high around 72°F and low around 52°F.

That certainly doesn't mean every January day is cool. Florida winter weather can vary, with warm sunny stretches followed by cooler days after a front passes through.

Beach walks, shelling, shopping and outdoor activities can be wonderful this time of year. Whether it's warm enough to spend the day swimming is much more dependent on the weather during your particular visit.

February

By February, temperatures begin creeping upward. Average highs are around 75°F, while lows average around 55°F.

February is also historically one of the drier months of the year in the Sarasota-Bradenton climate normals, making it an appealing time for visitors who prefer comfortable temperatures for exploring outdoors.

Winter packing tip: Bring warm-weather clothes, but add a sweater, sweatshirt or light jacket and a pair of long pants for cooler mornings and evenings.

Spring Weather on Anna Maria Island: March, April & May

Spring is when temperatures begin climbing quickly and Anna Maria Island transitions toward its warmer-weather rhythm.

March

March brings average highs around 78°F and lows around 58°F.

Days can be pleasantly warm while mornings and evenings remain comfortable. This is a great time for combining beach days with biking, walking, kayaking, shopping and exploring the island.

April

By April, the average high reaches about 83°F, while the average low is around 63°F.

For many visitors, April offers the kind of weather they picture when dreaming about Florida: warm afternoons, comfortable evenings and plenty of opportunities to be outdoors.

May

May begins to feel much more like summer. Average highs climb to about 88°F, with lows around 68°F.

Humidity also begins increasing as the region approaches its summer thunderstorm season. It's an excellent time to start planning your days around plenty of water, sunscreen and breaks from the midday sun.

Summer Weather on Anna Maria Island: June, July & August

Summer on Anna Maria Island is hot, humid and made for the water.

Average highs reach around 90°F or above from June through August, while average lows remain in the mid-70s. This is the season for mornings at the beach, swimming in the Gulf, afternoons by the pool and cold treats after a day in the Florida sunshine.

It is also the wettest part of the year.

June

June averages around 90°F during the day and 74°F at night. Average rainfall increases sharply to just over seven inches as the summer thunderstorm pattern becomes established.

July

July averages around 91°F during the day and 75°F at night, with average monthly rainfall a little over seven inches.

Plan outdoor activities with the heat in mind. Earlier beach trips, plenty of hydration and a shady break during the hottest part of the day can make summer days much more comfortable.

August

August is typically one of the hottest and wettest months, with an average high around 92°F, an average low around 75°F and just over nine inches of average rainfall.

But here's something important to understand when looking at those rainfall numbers:

Nine inches of average monthly rain does not mean an August vacation equals seven straight days of rain.

West Central and Southwest Florida's summer weather is influenced by heat, humidity and daily sea breezes, creating frequent showers and thunderstorms. The National Weather Service identifies the local rainy/thunderstorm season as generally beginning in late May and winding down around early October, although timing varies from year to year.

So if your weather app shows a thunderstorm symbol every day of your summer vacation, don't automatically assume your trip is ruined.

Check the hourly forecast, keep plans flexible and remember that Florida summer weather can change throughout the day.

What About Afternoon Thunderstorms?

Summer visitors often ask us whether it rains all day on Anna Maria Island.

Sometimes extended periods of rain happen, but a rainy-season forecast does not automatically mean an all-day washout.

Thunderstorm timing depends on wind patterns, sea breezes, moisture and other atmospheric conditions, which means storms don't arrive at exactly the same time or place every day.

A flexible vacation schedule works beautifully during the summer.

If the morning looks great, enjoy it. Head to the beach, take your dolphin tour, go paddleboarding or explore the island. If storms develop later, use that time to relax at your vacation rental, grab something to eat or switch to an indoor activity.

And if the clouds clear? Back to vacation.

A Very Important Note About Lightning

Rain and lightning are two different concerns.

If you hear thunder while you're on the beach, get out of the water and leave the beach immediately. The National Weather Service recommends moving to a substantial building or enclosed metal-topped vehicle and waiting at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before returning outside.

Don't use an open beach pavilion, umbrella or picnic shelter as lightning protection.

Fall Weather on Anna Maria Island: September, October & November

September

September still feels very much like summer. Average highs are around 90°F, with lows around 74°F, and the summer thunderstorm pattern can continue.

Warm weather and warm Gulf conditions keep beach and pool days firmly on the vacation agenda.

September is also within the more active portion of the Atlantic hurricane season, so travelers should monitor forecasts as their trip approaches.

October

October is when the transition becomes much more noticeable.

Average highs drop to around 86°F, with lows around 68°F, and average rainfall falls considerably compared with September.

You'll still find warm beach weather, but the combination of decreasing humidity and increasingly comfortable mornings and evenings can make October especially enjoyable for biking, walking, outdoor dining and exploring Anna Maria Island.

November

November's average high is around 80°F, with an average low around 60°F. It's also historically one of the drier months in the local climate normals.

You'll want a light layer for cooler mornings and evenings, but daytime temperatures can still be lovely for spending time outside.

When Is Hurricane Season on Anna Maria Island?

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

That six-month window does not mean a hurricane is expected during your vacation. It identifies the portion of the year when tropical systems are most likely to develop in the Atlantic basin.

Historically, the majority of Atlantic tropical activity occurs during the latter part of the season, with the climatological peak around September 10 and most activity concentrated from mid-August through mid-October.

Tropical weather should always be taken seriously, but long-range seasonal hurricane outlooks cannot tell you whether a particular storm will affect Anna Maria Island during a particular vacation week.
