2015 Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival

Cortez – The 33rd annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival is this Saturday and Sunday, February 14th-15th from 10:00am – 6:00pm. Art, music and seafood will bring scores of people to the historic Cortez fishing village and you won’t want to miss it!

cortez commercial village festival

Admission – $3.00 for Adults – Children 12 under free

To find Cortez Village on a map, locate Bradenton which is about 50 miles south of Tampa. Find State Road 684, known locally as Cortez Road or 44th Avenue, and go west to the beaches.

Remote Parking for the Annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival

Every year there is a something new at the Festival. Festival goers will want to note that there is a remote parking area in west Bradenton. You can avoid the traffic and enjoy the bus ride with your friends to the Festival ($2.50 round trip). The new parking site is located at G. T. Bray Park (5502 33rd Ave. Dr. W., Bradenton, 34209). Just turn east off of 59th St. onto 33rd Ave. W. You can’t miss it.

As in past years, this same shuttle service is being provided from the remote parking area located at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island. Island folks can take the free trolley to the parking site.

Also, the parking area just east of the village off of Cortez Road has been expanded again this year. But get there early or later in the day as this parking area tends to fill up quickly. Parking spots open up later in the day.

Another option is to park in the western part of town. Many folks manage small parking areas throughout the village with some charging a fee depending on how close they are to the village.

The Annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival is organized entirely by a volunteer committee of the Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (F.I.S.H.), a Florida not-for-profit corporation.

Ernie would be proud!

Anna Maria – Back in the day….When you walked into the IGA grocery store at 9807 Gulf Drive , you would most often find old Ernie Cagnina chewing on his cigar, barking at a stock boy or cracking jokes with customers. He always had colorful Gladiolas for sale when they were available. Ernie was a big part of Anna Maria Island. He served his community through volunteer work, as mayor of the city of Anna Maria and by quietly extending credit to members of his ‘island family’ if they fell on hard times.

These days, the store that has spent so many years serving residents and visitors, is busier than ever carrying on the tradition. No, you won’t find cans of corn neatly stacked on shelves, but you will find one of the best latte’s this side of the Mississippi (I highly recommend the “STAR WARS”), wonderful trinkets and treasures from local artists and kitschy, take home gifts (just to remind your friends that YOU spent time in paradise and they got a key ring!) .

Now Ginny’s & Jane E’s offers a WIDE variety of wonderful goodies; the cinnamon rolls are the size of a dinner plate, it took six different trials before they found the PERFECT corned beef for the bestest Rueben around! You can take your breakfast or lunch to the beach or hang out in the big casual dining area that is just as much a mish mosh of tables and chairs as the visitors to our beautiful island!

ginnys and jane e's in Anna Maria City

Breakfast entrees run from $4.95 to $9.00, for omelets to tantalizing scones and pastries, fresh fruit to waffles. Lunch is just as deserving of raves. Sandwiches, salads, soups, Panini and wraps will average $7 to $10 per person for a wonderful lunch of comfort food with a twist. It shows that the team at Ginny’s & Jane E’s are passionate about being a part of the great Island experience for our visitors and residents. Ice cold beer and wine are also available. How good can it get?!

2014 Food and Wine on Pine – Anna Maria Island Festival

Anna Maria – The 4th annual 2014 Food and Wine on Pine is taking place on May 3rd on historic Pine Avenue in Anna Maria. Featuring the very best in food, win art and music on the island, you won’t want to miss this unique event.

2014 Food and Wine on Pine

2014 Food and Wine on Pine on Pine Avenue

Twenty five local restaurants will feature their unique cuisine. This is all while you taste at least thirty upscale wines. Craft and domestic beers will also be available! Approximately 40 juried artists, more than 30 musical acts and more will line Pine Avenue.

New for this year is a Kentucky Derby Tent. Here you can watch the spectacle on big screen tv’s called the Pine Avenue Downs. There will be other derby related events including betting on the race, a bar serving up Mint Julips and more. It’s almost as good at being in Kentucky!

This event is popular among locals and visitors, and is well attended every year too! While this event grows in popularity, it always offers something new each year.

Food and wine on Pine is organized by the Chiles group of restaurants. They will also be among the vendors list of participants.

Stay tuned to the Food and Wine on Pine website for more information!

Ocean Star Review. . . For Kids!!! :)

Hey kids!  You’ve made your way back to Kids Corner, the #1 island blog written by kids, for kids.  I’m here to talk about one of the best Asian food places on the island, Ocean Star.  Not only does it have awesome food, but the atmosphere is very realistic and entertaining.  Read on if you want to learn more.

Ocean Star is this great sushi and Japanese food restaurant located at the Galati Marina.  It hcontact_oceanstarlogoas the most yummiest sushi and dumplings you’ve ever tasted.  And no matter what you like there’s something on the menu to amuse everyone.

So let’s start with the food.  Honestly, I would have to say that sushi is their specialty.  My favorite has to be the Hawaiian Role-Tuna and Cream Cheese tempura with eel sauce-soooo good!  I mean, the other items I have tried on the menu were fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but I think the thing they spend more time perfecting their sushi than anything else.  But if you’re not exactly the sushi type, Ocean Star has plenty of other options for you.  They make a variety of tempura dishes (fried veggies and fish – finger food that satisfies even people like my brother).  They also serve many different types of rice, dumplings, soups, noodles, and even steak, to satisfy your hunger.  So feel free to eat up and enjoy!

Next, the atmosphere.  As soon as you walk in the door, it’s as if you’ve entered a whole different world.  In short, it’s very different than your everyday mealtime.  You can eat at a table, in a booth, at the bar, or in a canopied-in booth with strips of seating area all around the table.  To add to the realistic Japanese ambiance, the lights are dim and the chefs are constantly preparing food right in front of you, which adds to the awesome mood.

So, to conclude, Ocean Star is a fun, awesome restaurant that serves great food, has a fantabulous atmosphere, and is a great place to eat whether you have a special event or are just looking for a cool place to eat for dinner or lunch.  Well, i gotta go.  See ya l8tr. Byeeeee!!!!!!!!

Pine Avenue was packed from 11am- 6pm for the 3rd annual Food and Wine on Pine. The atmosphere could not have been better perfect weather, booths with delicious food, and some great wine tastings.  At the Island Real Estate office we had a show stopper with our new TAMI Turtle photo op. Young and old had a good laugh and a chance to send a digital postcard of their day on beautiful Anna Maria Island.  Not sure how next year’s event could top this years but the Chiles Group/Sandbar Restaurant will once again pull out all the stops to make it a special event in 2014.
