Anna Maria – Two locals, Pat and Doug Copeland, are the first two people on Anna Maria Island to set up a Little Free Library, a book sharing initiative pushed by the international organization Little Free Library.
What is it you ask? From the Little Free Library website“It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share.”
A few years ago Pat Copeland was watching the nightly news when she saw a segment on Little Free Libraries. The idea was so intriguing to her that she asked her husband Doug, an Anna Maria Commissioner, to build her one for Christmas. After addressing objections from the city on the logistics of setting up a permanent outdoor library, a special ordinance was created that allowed 5 to be built in the city. They populated it with their own books and those of friends and it’s been a popular edition to the northern part of Anna Maria Island.
Pat and Doug encourage everybody to take a minute, head over to their Little Free Library located at 708 North Bay Boulevard and read a book.
The Anna Maria Island Tingley Memorial Library is a community reading center non-profit building separate from the county libraries.
Anna Maria Island Tingley Memorial Library
This wonderful facility is funded completely from donations and is run by it’s wonderful staff of volunteers. It is $4.00 per year and children 14 and under are free. Make sure that when you visit you have your Local address, phone number, and photo I.D. You can even renew your book loans by phone, convenient right? This family friendly library has everything from popular fiction, to non- fiction (including biographies). This is also a great place to bring children of all ages for some relaxing family fun.
While it is a small facility, the Library is a great place to visit on a rainy day. Their selection is also fantastic with much to pick through. There is nothing better than reading a good book on the beach, so visit today.
Just about any Library service a small town needs is here too!
The Anna Maria Island Library is not the only one in the area! There is also a great Independent Library for locals and visitors.
Anna Maria Island Library
Bradenton Beach’s Tingley Memorial Library houses audio books, tourist information, cd’s, computers, free wi-fi internet, reading material for all ages and even videos and DVD’s. It’s one of two libraries on the Island, however it differentiates itself from the Holmes Beach Public Library. It is not government funded. It is actually run completely by charitable volunteers who commit their time to this non profit that aids the community without using any tax dollars, just donations and generosity. The library also features a children’s corner, free conference room facility, and copy/fax services.
Great for a Rainy Day
One of my favorite things to do on a rainy day is to go to the library and browse their extensive book collections and genres then find a cushy bean bag (or a shady palm tree if its not raining) and a corner to read in.
Purchase a card or kids under 14 are free
You can purchase a library card for $4 annually (or free if you are under 14 years old)! You can even renew your library books over the phone too! This is an accommodation not offered by public libraries. If you are planning a day trip while vacationing on the Island nothing cuts down on the ever famous “are we there yet” road trip slogan like getting lost in a good audio book on the ride. You’ll be there before you know it! Though many of our vacation rentals offer small selections of owner and guest provided literature, find more here too!
The Tingley Memorial Library is two blocks south of the Cortez Bridge Rd at 111 2nd Street North. This is behind City Hall and just off Gulf Drive. They have a trolley stop conveniently located a hop away and offer a bike rack for public use as well.
The Selby Public Library will be hosting the 3rd annual “Looking Into the Crystal Ball” fundraiser sponsored by Friends of the Selby Public Library. The event will be on January 9th from 7pm to 10pm with over two dozen local restaurants and food vendors providing delicious samples of their specialties. A cash bar will be provided by Libby’s Cafe + Bar. Continuous performances will take place near the library’s signature staircases including singer/performer Jimmy Mazz, the Fred Astaire Ballroom Dancers, belly dancers, musicians, palm readers, intuitive readers, and other specialty acts. Art, wellness and author exhibits will be there plus much more. Past Looking Into the Crystal Ball fundraisers have had over 1500 attendees so get your tickets while they’re hot.
Event proceeds will support the hundreds of free Selby Library activities and events for teens and children. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

It’s absolutely free to use the 8 computers they have on site with Internet as well as use their Internet hub for your laptop.
