Sign of the Mermaid Anna Maria – Closed as of 2019
Sign of the Mermaid is located in the city Anna Maria on Gulf drive. The restaurant is in a quaint house renovated to accommodate dining guests. Built in 1912 this restaurant is an old home. Creaking floors, artwork, and fabulous antiques are just a few of the items that define the decor of this unusual home.
Meal at the Sign of the Mermaid Anna Maria tend to be larger. They offer seafood, pasta, chicken, lamb, steaks, wonderful appetizers, and out of this world desserts. For breakfast try out the Eggs Andrea. A delicious spin on a traditional Benedict. The dinner menu also has tons of classic favorites with a unique twist. Additionally, in season we recommend reservations, and the atmosphere accommodates children. Sign of the Mermaid has mixed reviews mostly due to the age of the restaurant and the decor. If you prefer the journey to a dining experience we would suggest Sign of the Mermaid.

Anna Maria Island – You can buy a t-shirt that says “Life is sweeter on vacation” and I totally agree, but vacation is the best time to relax your regular diet a little and enjoy a treat after a delicious island meal. Anna Maria Island has some of the best dessert offerings around and here are a few of my personal favorites that I hope you can try.
Eat Here: Sean Murphy was mixing salty and sweet before it was trendy! The “pot de crème” is what I always order – a delicious thick decadent chocolate pudding served in a cute little glass jar with a sprinkling of sea salt on top. The combination of creamy, sweet and salty is just perfect. Kind of reminds me of the salt from the gulf.
Blue Marlin: Bring a friend so you can each order one of my favorites and taste – best of both worlds! The tropical bread pudding puts a fruity spin on a southern classic. The pineapple and orange sauce is amazing all on its own. Blue Marlin also makes a Guinness Chocolate cake with real Guinness stout beer in the mix! The chocolate is rich and the cake perfectly moist yet the hint of stout at the end of a bite is what makes this cake so different. Of course you should wash it down with a cold Guinness instead of milk!
Island Grill: They make a “grown up” s’mores sundae that I hate to admit you should share. I’m all about having my own dessert, yet this one is just too much for one person unless you made it your full meal (which is a good idea, actually!). They take the most delicious warm brownie ever made and on top goes delicious vanilla bean ice cream which has been rolled in graham crackers. The s’mores part kicks in with a marshmallow topping that is toasted to be just like a campfire treat. Caramel and chocolate sauce is drizzled on top and of course more graham crackers. Begin the sugar coma!
Anna Maria is well known for its white sandy beaches and amazing Gulf front dining. But dinner is not the only time to discover one of the island’s culinary gems; breakfast IS the most important meal of the day after all!
It would be impossible to pick “the best” breakfast restaurant on the island, as each has a unique personality. Southern Living touts Ginny’s & Jane E’s at the Old IGA for a special breakfast experience, the fabulous Morning Glory muffin and the funky beach chic boutique. Sink your toes in the sand at the Sandbar during their Sunday jazz brunch. While visiting one of Forbes List of America’s Prettiest Towns, try the Donut Experiment on Historic Pine Avenue. For an international flair, the Island Creperie French Bistro located on Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach serves up a myriad of selections. In the mood to eat alot of pancakes? Try the all you can eat pancake breakfast at the Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe.
Local favorites include the home style of Peach’s in Holmes Beach, the “specials board” is always something special! Minnie’s is a great little breakfast and lunch spot. A petite restaurant offering great service, an intimate setting and nice portions…be sure to bring cash, because Minnie’s, as well as several other local favorites are still cash only!
