Annual Events Anna Maria Island

Below we have compiled a list of the top annually running events on Anna Maria Island. Don’t miss these during your stay! They have been conveniently organized by the season in which they occur. Starting with Winter and ending with Fall.

Winter

Anna Maria Island winter events
Winter Events on Anna Maria Island offer family fun!

This is a fun time of year as cool weather drives locals and visitors off the beaches into warmer activities. Unless you have a wet suit to keep you warm, or are staying in a rental with a heated pool, many folks don’t care for swimming. Even in the mild Florida winter weather. Winter events on Anna Maria Island provide a great opportunity for unique holiday shopping. Also enjoy entertainment across the island’s three cities.

There are five holiday related events found on the island in the month of December. These include the Privateers Christmas Parade, Winter Fest, The lighting of Bridge Street and the Lighted Boat Parade. Click on the link here to read about these holiday happenings. Pine Avenue in the city of Anna Maria also offers a holiday walk. Typically happening in mid December the Pine Avenue Holiday walk offers carolers and shopping along with refreshments provided by Pine Avenue businesses.

One of the areas most popular events happening in the middle of winter is the Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival.  This event actually takes place off island in the old Cortez Fishing Village located just over the Cortez Bridge. This event has been running for over 30 years drawing a crowd of 10,000. The Cortez Fishing Festival happens in February, usually the second weekend of the month. A celebration of the commercial fishing industry in Cortez, this event raises funds to preserve local mangrove wetlands to ensure and protect a healthy fish and wildlife population.

Spring

Spring on Anna Maria Island brings us gorgeous weather. There are many days of clear skies, perfectly crisp breezes and warm sunshine. There are four annual Spring events you can’t miss if you are visiting at this wonderful time of year.

A fun annual event for 18 years and counting, the Beach Bistro St. Patricks Day Parade usually features dancers, cyclists, bag pipers, live animals and a rowdy bunch of green clad island folks ready for a party. Hosted by the Beach Bistro, this event always offers fun and laughs for all ages.

A celebration of local arts and artists, Spring Fest has been hosted by the Anna Maria Island Art League for 28 years. In addition to arts and crafts, Spring Fest offers live music and fabulous food vendors. This event takes place in the Holmes Beach city field located at 5901 Marina Drive. This event usually takes place the first weekend in March or April.

The Annual Sandbar Easter Egg Hunt is always a crowd pleaser for the entire family. Kids search for Eggs on the beach, then everyone joins in on the Easter parade down Pine Avenue for kid games, face painting and refreshments provided by the Sandbar.

Food and Wine on Pine is a fabulous foodie event offering selections from the area’s best restaurants along with great wine selections. Enjoy live music while you taste your way through this fun event.

Summer

Summer fun on Anna Maria Island
Hot Summer days end with gorgeous sunsets on Anna Maria Island.

Summer is a favorite time of year on Anna Maria Island. The summer island life consists of hot days, rainy afternoons and relaxing beach goers. Find crowded beaches lined with turtle nests, baby shorebirds begging for fish, and happily sunbathing patrons. Temperatures of the Gulf of Mexico are warm. Perfect for relaxing on a floaty with a cold drink in hand. While the beach is really the main attraction during summer months, the island also offers a few fun events.

While technically falling in the Spring, Memorial Day Weekend is the start of summer fun and warm Florida weather. A bustling weekend full of people swimming, tanning and spending a long weekend with family, Memorial Day is a great time to simply enjoy being a beach bum. There are no big events, However, Memorial Day does serve as a great time to trolley hop around Anna Maria Island. You’ll enjoy exploring different beaches, fabulous shopping, and amazing restaurants.

There’s nothing more fun than a small town patriotic parade, and Anna Maria Island’s 4th of July Parade is the perfect example. Starting on the southern end of the Island at Coquina Beach the parade makes it’s way up the island throwing candy, beads and trinkets for the kids spreading 4th of July cheer along the way.

Every year there are two public fireworks displays put on by Chiles Restaurant Group at the Beach House and Sandbar restaurants. Most years the Beach House fireworks show happens July 3rd with the Sandbars display following on the 4th. Occasionally the fireworks display has been canceled at the Beach House out of respect to the island’s precious nesting shorebirds that enjoy the strip of coast in very close proximity to the restaurant.

Fall

"<yoastmark

Fall on Anna Maria Island brings us a slight respite from hot days transitioning into warm days allowing the swimming season to continue up until December in most years. This time of year brings the island several great family fun events!

Fall is packed with Annual events!

Bay Fest is the largest running event on Anna Maria Island. This event takes place on Pine Avenue. At Bay Fest you’ll enjoy food, music, vendors and a car show.

The Anna Maria Island Fall Festival happens in the Holmes Beach city field at 5901 Marina Drive in Holmes Beach. Taking place just before Halloween, this event kicks off with a Halloween Parade starting at Anna Maria Island elementary and ending at the city field.

Trick or Treating house to house is not a popular tradition among island neighborhoods. Therefore, the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce hosts a three city wide Trail of Treats sponsored by local businesses. The Trail of Treats starts with a kids costume contest at the Chamber of Commerce located at 5313 Gulf Drive. After the contest kids and parents are welcome to stroll around the Holmes Beach town center collecting candy from businesses from 4-6pm. After cruising through Holmes Beach, head up to Pine Avenue or down to Bridge Street for additional trick or treating from 5-8pm. Typically this event happens on or just before Halloween depending if the Holiday falls on a weekend.

Anna Maria Islanders greatly anticipate Stone Crab Season. Starting in mid October, Floridians and Island locals begin harvesting Stone Crabs by the bucket load. The Cortez Stone Crab Festival, happening in early November, is a fabulous way to enjoy this locally sourced seafood.

Wrapping up autumn events the annual Arts Hop is a great way to experience local arts, crafts, music and food. This island wide celebration of arts and culture is organized by the Cultural Connections of Anna Maria Island. This three day event includes art walks, theater performances and a beach front chorus and orchestra performance called “Symphony on the Sand”.

Anna Maria Island Memorial Day Fun Guide

An Anna Maria Island Memorial Day is full of fun on the beach, cooking food on the grill and spending time with family and friends. While this holiday symbolizes the ultimate sacrifices of those who served in the U.S. military, we also use this time to reflect on their contribution to the American life style. We respectfully pay gratitude to our fallen soldiers and their families too.

Anna Maria Island Memorial Day Fun Guide
Be safe, have fun and relax with friends and family this Memorial Day on Anna Maria Island.

Anna Maria Island Memorial Day

Memorial day happens end of spring, but this really is the kick-off of summer beach fun. Here is our guide to Memorial Day fun on island time.

Sunblock

This is the first and most important component of your day on the beach. The easier you burn the higher the SPF number you”ll require. Be sure to apply sunblock at least 20 minutes before you hit the sun, and re-apply every two hours. Trust us on this one!

Arrive Early

Since this is a popular beach day, you’ll want to arrive early to snag the best spot. If you have booked an Anna Maria Island beach rental, this will be easy to accomplish!

Family Fun Games

Beach games are a great way to keep the family engaged. There are many different options now beyond the traditional football and volleyball. Try out corn hole, Bocce ball, Tiki toss or even set up beach pong. Beach pong is played similarly to beer pong, except use large beach buckets instead of solo cups.

Mind the Wildlife

Nesting shorebirds and turtles will be on the sand during this time of year. Always be sure to steer clear of marked off nesting areas. Crowds can cause wildlife to become stressed out. Don’t chase birds or feed the gulls.

Grilling

While personal grills and open fires are not permitted on any island beaches, public charcoal grills can be found at Coquina Beach, Manatee Public Beach and Bay front park. Hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and watermelon make an easy and traditional Memorial day feast.

This year try something new! Kebabs are a great grilling item, and a watermelon, blueberry, feta salad is a nice twist on the traditional. Key Lime Pie is always a fantastic idea for any Florida style gathering.

Trolley Hopping

The Anna Maria Island free trolley is an excellent way to get around. If you need to take a break from the sun, hop on the air conditioned trolley for a sight seeing adventure. The trolley runs from Anna Maria City Pier all the way down to Coquina beach with stops along the way. If you see something interesting just hop off, and another trolley will be by approximately every 20 minutes.

Be safe

While enjoying the holiday be sure to stay safe. Whether you’ll be beaching, biking, boating, fishing or just lazily floating, always be sure to follow posted signage and local regulations. Anna Maria Island beaches do not allow alcoholic beverages or fireworks. If you do plan on drinking, please do so responsibly. Never drink and drive.

When you follow our Memorial Day Fun Guide you’re sure to have a pleasant and memorable experience on Anna Maria Island! Plan your family holiday today at IslandReal.com!

National Travel and Tourism Week – Faces of Travel Anna Maria Island

National Travel and Tourism week is an event marking the large impact travel has on the U.S. economy. Established by a congressional resolution in 1983, travel and tourism professionals across the country host a variety of events, rallies and out reach programs to strengthen this fun and amazing component of local and national economies. Yes! Travel isn’t just good for your mental health, but for success as a country too!

National Travel and Tourism Week – Faces of Travel May 7-13, 2017

This year the U.S. National Travel Association chose the theme “Faces of Travel” highlighting the millions of individuals who work to keep the industry alive. Each year over 15 million people work in jobs supported by travel!

Anna Maria Island – Faces of Travel

In keeping with this years theme, Island Real Estate is highlighting some of the amazing local faces who both thrive on and support our local travel industry. Because travel and tourism are such a strong economic factor in Florida, we applaud those who keep Anna Maria Island travel a driving force of local viability.

We reached out to industry locals and asked, “Why do you think Anna Maria Island is the best beach vacation destination in Florida?” Here’s what they had to say.

National Travel and Tourism Week
Anna Maria Island beaches attract over 1 millions travelers each year. It’s easy to see why!

Jo-ann Lefner – Owner of Bella by the Sea Boutique on Anna Maria Island

“The sun on your face, the sand on your toes, credit card in hand to shop the cutest boutiques all on one island. Ask me what’s better than that…maybe a Margarita at sunset!”

The Ciardullo Family Frank, Kathy and Kristi – Vacation Rental Owners – Fernweh in Holmes Beach

“We had never heard of the word Fernweh, but once we discovered its meaning we knew it was the perfect name for our home as it could best describe the feelings that Anna Maria Island brings, being homesick for a place you’ve never been.”

Larry Chatt – Owner of Island Real Estate of Anna Maria Island

“I have made it a point to travel within Florida to A LOT of beach destinations.  Over the years I get a lot of questions like, “What is Anna Maria Island like compared to xxxx , Florida.”  So over the years I have visited at least 20 beach locations in Florida so I knew the question to that answer!

Cedar Key, Siesta Key, Englewood, Fort Myers Beach, Clearwater Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Boca Grande, St. Augustine, Destin, Panama City, Fort Lauderdale, Flagler Beach, Cocoa Beach.  With the Exception of West of Panama City Beach and areas of Miami Beach I have driven the entire coast of Florida and have stayed in at least 20 beach communities. Of course every location has it’s pros and cons but using the following criteria there are no other locations I have seen in Florida much less the world that measures up to Anna Maria Island.

Quality of the sand and beach. Our sand is like confectionery sugar.  Other Gulf Coast locations have a similar whiteness but it is littered with shells and is not as soft or the beach is absolutely packed with patrons. I have been unable to replicate our beach anywhere along the coast of Florida or for that matter on the EAST coast or West Coast of the United States. There is plenty of beautiful soft sand beach for everyone due to the low rise nature of our destination!

Family friendly.  Too often Florida beach destinations have a high rise nature to them and have been commercialized. It is hard to explain, we occasionally visit an establishment within a location that gives authenticity to the destination but we often waste the rest of our vacation looking for lightning in a bottle again.  I have personally witnessed this in several locations across the world let alone Florida. I could never find more than one place per destination that gave me that feeling we all yearn for when taking family vacations. A togetherness as a family captivated and enhanced by the authentic overall feeling provided by the destination. It is difficult to describe but once you find it you want to experience it over and over again as a family.  Anna Maria Island is littered with similar stories of successful corporate leaders that found paradise on Anna Maria Island. They quit their job to live and work in paradise.  I am a perfect example of such a story.

Dining friendly.  Anna Maria Island dining choices measure up against beach communities 10 times as large!  The best way to explain it is old Florida but with plenty of authentic places to shop and eat.  You can dine in a different location every night of the week and not have one bad meal.  I will admit I have found some very old Florida locations along the beach coast but I would have to travel 25 minutes to have more than a few restaurant choices.

In summary I have not found any beach locations with the quality of our sand, low density nature of our beaches but with plenty of authentic shopping and dining choices.  Anna Maria Island is not just one retail location that creates an old Florida feeling.  The authentic nature of our destination is emulated across our entire community.  Whether it be a free trolley ride down to one of many dining choices in one of our three cities or a walk along the beach grabbing a cocktail at a beach front restaurant.  If you yearn for the three main amenities our destination provides, you won’t be sorry finding a way to visit Anna Maria Island. I have done A LOT of research on the subject and across our wonderful coastal state I have been unable to replicate anything close to the amenities Anna Maria Island has to offer families searching for authentic old Florida.”

Yvonne Callahan – Vacation Rental Owner – Mango Breeze in Holmes Beach

“The island is laid back paradise with life in the slow lane, no high rise hotels and the small quaint streets with many fun casual dining places and beaches with white sand for your toes.”

Caryn Hodge – Marketing Director of Chiles Restaurant Group – The Sandbar, Beach House and Mar Vista

“Anna Maria Island is unlike any place in the world. Although most well-known for its pristine, sugar-soft sand beaches, Anna Maria also offers visitors an opportunity to slow down, step back to a time when things were simpler, and to experience old Florida in a variety of ways.

On Anna Maria you can park your car and forget about it as you ride the free trolley, walk or bike to your destination for dining, boutique shopping, live music, a stroll on the pier or whatever way you want to experience all the island has to offer.

Void of high rises and not overrun with corporate stores, the island hosts mostly locally owned, independent businesses that offer one-of-a-kind products and services. Award winning dining, excursions for every level of activity, and friendly locals make us a repeat destination for many visitors. Affordable, rich in history, enjoyable and unique. Anna Maria is the perfect place to experience true Old Florida the way it was meant to be.”

Melissa Fletcher – Vacation Rental Owner – Beach Escape in Holmes Beach

“That smell, that beachy smell and oh the sunsets. Nothing describes the beautiful colors in the night sky!  From the fun activities at Holmes Beach to the warm breeze at Bean Point! The Tiki bars  at Bradenton Beach to the ice cream at Two Scoops!  This island is my home away from home!”

Captain Kyle Taylor – Anna Maria Inshore Fishing Charters

“Anna Maria Island has some of the best beaches, weather, lifestyle, dining, and fishing that people look for in a travel destination. Some travel destinations can only claim one or two of these qualities. We have it all here, in one quaint package and we call it Anna Maria Island.”

Emma Brooks – Vacation Rental Owner – Beachy Blue in Holmes Beach

“This beautiful island is our little piece of paradise, the sun makes your heart shine! Stay at Beachy Blue steps away from the turquoise seas and close to some great restaurants and wonderful boutiques”

Deb Wing – President Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce

“Anna Maria Island (AMI for short) definitely lives up to its award winning accolades with clear turquoise blue waters, white sandy beaches, year round warm weather, eco-friendly terrain and abundant wildlife. Personally, I find it to be the most beautiful, laid back and least developed island on the West Coast of Florida, which is why I find it so appealing. The resorts, accommodations, restaurants, beauty and things to do in this paradise attract national and international travelers. AMI offers a taste of just about everything that people find charming about Florida – with dolphins playing, manatees swimming, turtles nesting, beautiful birds fishing, as well as an impressive history and culture – it’s a #1 destination”

Bradenton Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau – PR and Outreach Specialist – Kasara Morison

“There are many reasons why Anna Maria Island is the best beach vacation destination in Florida. A year-round summery vibe and warm, secluded feel work wonders on Anna Maria, making this the ultimate Florida beach retreat. Whether a nature lover, serenity seeker or beachgoer, there’s something for everyone on this easy to explore, coastal gem. The cozy and quaint feel of Anna Maria Island, makes it feel like a trip back in time to this paradise that hasn’t changed much since the 70’s and definitely has that “old Florida” feel. The numerous award-winning beaches, restaurants and events make Anna Maria Island the perfect relaxation spot for your next vacation.”

National Crab Meat Day on Anna Maria Island

When looking for local crab meat, we highly recommend Starfish Market in the old Cortez Fishing Village. This is the best spot to find fresh off the boat seafood! You can literally see the fishing boats right from the docks of this restaurant. It really doesn’t get fresher. Just be sure to bring cash only.

Many local seafood restaurants offer crab selections. While on Anna Maria Island also check out The Waterfront Restaurant, The Sandbar and the Rod & Reel Pier for tasty crab options. If you are on Longboat Key we suggest The Lazy Lobster!
