Libraries on Anna Maria Island: A Rainy Day Guide for Book Lovers & Families

Sunshine and beach days may be what bring most visitors to Anna Maria Island, but even paradise gets a rainy afternoon now and then.

When the clouds roll in—or your family simply needs a quiet break from the sun—Anna Maria Island's local libraries offer a relaxing change of pace. Families can find children's books and activities, adults can browse for their next beach read, and visitors who need a quiet place to catch up on a little work have options too.

There are two traditional libraries on Anna Maria Island, each with its own personality, along with Little Free Libraries and community book exchanges that can turn finding your next vacation read into part of the adventure.

📚 Island Branch Library in Holmes Beach

Located in the center of Anna Maria Island, the Island Branch Library is part of the Manatee County Public Library System.

Location:
5701 Marina Drive
Holmes Beach, FL 34217

This is much more than a place to pick up a book. The library offers collections and programs for different ages along with spaces where visitors can read, study, work or simply enjoy a quiet break indoors.

Families traveling with children will especially appreciate the dedicated children's room. Along with children's books, the space includes games, puzzles, toys, crafts and activities geared toward children ages 0–12.

The library also offers:

  • Children's room

  • Community room

  • Individual study rooms

  • Teen Tech Study Room

  • Computer workstation

  • Copier, scanner and fax services

  • Phone charging station

  • Restrooms

  • Programs and activities throughout the year

For parents traveling with kids, it can be an easy addition to a rainy-day itinerary when everyone needs a little time away from the vacation rental.

And if you brought your laptop because work couldn't completely stay home, the study spaces can provide a quiet place to get something accomplished before returning to vacation mode.

Island Branch Library Hours

Current library hours are:

Monday–Tuesday: 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
Thursday–Saturday: 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

Hours, programs and services can change, so check the Manatee County Public Library website before your visit.

📖 Tingley Memorial Library in Bradenton Beach

Head toward the southern end of Anna Maria Island and you'll find a completely different kind of library experience.

Tingley Memorial Library is located in the heart of Bradenton Beach and is an independent library rather than part of the Manatee County library system.

Location:
111 2nd Street N
Bradenton Beach, FL 34217

Built in 1994 with funding from benefactor Beulah Tingley, this small community library has become part of Bradenton Beach's local character.

Its collection includes popular fiction and nonfiction, children's books, large-print books, magazines, puzzles, DVDs and books on CD.

Visitors interested in the area may want to browse the library's Florida history and local author collections for a little extra Gulf Coast flavor.

Free public computers and Wi-Fi are also available.

One feature book lovers may particularly enjoy is Tingley's collection of used and rare books for sale. You might even head home from vacation with a new-to-you book as a souvenir.

Can Visitors Join Tingley Memorial Library?

Yes!

Membership isn't limited to permanent island residents. Visitors can become members for $10 per year, and children's cards are free with an adult sponsor.

That's a fun option for repeat Anna Maria Island visitors or anyone spending an extended vacation on the island.

Tingley Memorial Library Hours

Regular hours are currently:

Tuesday–Saturday: 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Seasonal hours may vary, so check with Tingley Memorial Library before planning your visit.

📕 Hunt for Little Free Libraries Around Anna Maria Island

Not every island library has a front desk.

Keep an eye out while exploring Anna Maria Island and you may discover a Little Free Library or neighborhood book exchange filled with books waiting for their next reader.

The concept is simple: find a book you'd like to read and leave or share a book when you can.

It can become a fun little vacation scavenger hunt for families. Look for a new bedtime story for the kids, find a mystery to read beside the pool or leave behind the novel you finished on the beach for another island visitor to enjoy.

Because individual Little Free Library locations can change, use the official Little Free Library World Map to search for registered locations near Anna Maria Island during your stay.

Who knows? Your next beach read may be waiting inside a tiny library you discover while exploring the island.

🌧️ A Simple Anna Maria Island Rainy-Day Activity

Florida rain doesn't necessarily mean losing an entire vacation day.

Some showers pass quickly, especially during the warmer months, making a library visit an easy activity to work into the day.

Spend an hour browsing books or letting the kids explore the children's area, then grab lunch, visit some island shops or head back to the beach when the skies clear.

If the rain decides to stick around longer, make the library one stop on a full rainy-day adventure.
