Anna Maria Island National Sangria Day

There are many options for celebrating National Sangria Day on Anna Maria Island! While you can find it on the menu at several island eateries, also make it at home!

National Sangria Day

While red is traditional, white and even sweet pink wines make Sangria. There are endless recipe variations for more adventurous wine lovers.

The basic components of Sangria include a wine, liquor, fruit juice, spice and sugar. You can really let your imagination run wild with different combinations.

Traditional Red

1 Bottle Dry Red Wine
1/3 cup Brandy or Cherry Brandy. Add more for extra kick.
3-4 Tablespoons Sugar. Substitute with Brown Sugar or even Honey.
3/4 Cup Orange Juice. Experiment with other juices such as Grapefruit.
1 Orange Sliced. Experiment with other sliced citrus such as Lemons, Limes or Seasonal Blood Oranges.
1/2 Green Apple Cubed. (Set some Fruit to the side for garnishing glasses)
Cinnamon garnish optional.
Soda Water optional for a more punch like drink.

Directions:

In a pitcher or bowl combine 1/2 of the sliced oranges and sugar. Gently muddle them together.
Add in the wine, brandy and orange juice. Gently stir.
Add lots of ice.
Top with remaining orange slices and apples.

Select a large wine glass or tall tumbler. Fill with ice and poor Sangria in. Garnish with additional fruit, a splash of club soda and a sprinkle of Cinnamon.

How to be a Mermaid on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria- Remember watching The Little Mermaid as a kid and wanting to be just like Ariel? Well, now is your chance to make that childhood dream a REALITY. With so many great shops on Anna Maria Island, transforming yourself into the mermaid you’ve always wanted to be is as easy as ever. As a fun activity for both kids and adults, make sure to grab these mermaid essentials and spend your vacation feeling like the queen of the sea!

Mermaid Essentials

Jewelry

If you’re a mermaid, it’s always important to sport some jewelry that shows your love for the sea. Shops on Anna Maria such as Bridge Street Jewelers and Tide & Moon Jewelry sell beautiful handmade and designer jewelry. Also, many shells on the beach already have holes in them. Just string them together and you’ve got your own DIY bracelet!

Swimsuit

Every mermaid knows to have a cute swimsuit, and we’ve got you covered here on the island. The Island Bazaar and West Coast Surf Shop is one of my favorite stores to get bathing suits, cover-ups, and everything in-between. They have good prices and good quality products!

Blankets/Towels

While relaxing on the beach, having a comfy blanket or towel to sit on is always a must-have. The West Coast Surf Shop has some really cute towels to lounge on, and is the perfect way to spice up your look!

Drinks

One of the best ways to enjoy your mermaid experience is by adding a yummy drink to it! For adults, treat your taste-buds at The Waterfront Restaurant & Craft Bar where they serve drinks such as Pimm’s Cup, a mix of sour, sliced lemon, cucumber, strawberries and topped with sprite. However, at Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe kids can enjoy a Coconut Créme which is essentially a non-alcoholic Piña Colada. Overall, fruity drinks make for the perfect mermaid experience!

Books!

Every good mermaid has a good beachy book. One of my favorites is The Blue Bistro, which is about a girl who moves to the island of Nantucket in order to find herself a new job. She has had trouble with commitment to people and places in the past, but when she starts to like her new boss she doesn’t know what to do. This book is a mixture of drama and romance, and is great to read on the beach!

Gluten Free Dining on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island – In the ever changing list of fad diets, Gluten-Free has proven itself a steadfast member in the restaurant community. Whether you enjoy a healthy life style choice or are coping with Celiac Disease, the Gluten Free menu is becoming more and more popular in today’s dining circuit.

Anna Maria Island is no stranger to the trend and has a variety of restaurants that offer Gluten Free menus. Some advantages to this lifestyle is that the many people who convert note that they feel radically better physically and emotionally after their body cycles out any gluten. While only about 1% of the population are true Celiac disease sufferers, many more have a gluten sensitivity which causes cramps, fatigue,  stomach pains from eating excessive amounts of food containing gluten.  Many people have no symptoms but feel much “lighter” and energetic after cutting out the ingredient. Something to be careful of however, is many people go Gluten-Free to lose weight assuming it is a healthier choice-unfortunately this can be a myth as many pre-packaged gluten free products can be very high in calories and saturated fats! I like to stay somewhere in the gray area – I’m not anti-gluten but I am gluten-sensible!

Thanks to the increasing recognition of gluten caused discomfort, island eateries have a high demand for gluten free menu options; check out our list below for Island Real Estate’s favorites:
