The week between Fay and Gustav was a true feeding frenzy for all of the birds that were in flying distance of Anna Maria Island. It was as though someone had rung the feeding bell and they all showed up for some very tasty little bait fish. The small shiners glistened at the edge of the shore and were in abundance. Children were catching them with their hands and filling up buckets full just because they could! When there are storms out in the Gulf of Mexico we see changes in the shoreline, unusual shells wash onto shore, surfers arrive and the shoreline redefines itself. This has been an outstanding week for sunsets on Anna Maria Island. Unfortunately, many of our turtle nests were lost to the increased surge caused by the storms. The nests that hold over 100 eggs are checked on a daily basis by devoted volunteers. This Island is known for the nature that surrounds us and shares a spirituality witnessed by those who have chosen to live here or are lucky enough to visit our paradise.
