The fishing off of the piers, bridges, and along the shoreline on Anna Maria Island has been very promising catching Redfish, Snapper Black drum, Snook, Trout, Spanish mackerel, and Amberjack. There are 3 piers on Anna Maria Island that allow fishing, and have bait shops.

The Historic Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach offers free fishing on the pier, a bait shop, floating boat dock, a restaurant, and the pier is well lit at night. The City of Anna Maria has 2 piers that you can fish from the City Pier and The Rod & Reel Pier just down the beach. Both of the Piers have a restaurant, and bait shop, but the City Pier allows cast netting up to the yellow line before the restaurant.

If you would like to fish off shore you can launch your boat at the Kingfish Boat Ramp in Holmes Beach and get your chance to catch large game fish like: Tarpon, Mackerel, and Grouper in deeper water. If you did not bring a watercraft for an off shore adventure it is always worth going out on a fishing charter or renting a boat for the day to catch these larger game fish.

Fishing Report For June 2011 by capt Gary Zink

Fishing has been very good for us, we have caught grey snappers by the bucket full every time we have gone out.  We also have caught groupers ( catch and release for the most part ) because the gag grouper are out of season.  Porgies and trigger fish as well as sea bass have been very plentiful as well.  We are still catching kings on our trips, we landed a 52 ” king just last week.

Sharks are common to catch right now as well.  Out boat , the EDDY LEE, leaves the dock at the Seafood Shack in Cortez, every morning at 8 a.m. for a 6 hour trip.  The Eddy Lee is capable of handling 49 passengers but we like to limit our trips to 24 passengers so it is not crowded.

June Fishing Update On Anna Maria Island

Tarpon has been on every anglers mind lately, and from what I hear they have been biting like crazy along the beaches of Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island.  Try using crab for bait, and when you hook into a tarpon be ready for a fight.  We have been hearing of battles that have lasted up to an hour and a half.

Inshore fishing around Anna Maria Island has been excellent, producing big numbers of trout.  The reports have been coming in about lots of catch and release snook and gag grouper.

Cobia have been lurking under the piers and bridges feeding on pinfish.  The outgoing tides in the afternoon are your best bet to catch redfish and mullet that are patrolling the flats.

Offshore red snapper are being caught in about 120 feet of water, and mangrove snapper have been biting in 60-80 feet of water.  Try using live shiners or live shrimp. A chum block is a great way to bring the snapper closer to the boat and get them in the mood to start biting.

Boats are light, so there’s lots of room to fish….

WHAT’S BITING??

Offshore fishing has been great.  Gags are still in close, inside state water in the 4 to 7 mile range- target hard bottom and ledges. Thewater has warmed up, the bait is thick and the Kingfish are here in full force.  Snapper and Amberjack are plentiful on your wrecks and springs.

6 hour trips

These day trips are averaging 150 Grey Snapper, a few Porgies, Sea Bass, little Red Groupers (for catch & release),  King fish, Spotty, and a  couple of Reef Sharks.

On the piers

Lots of Spanish Mackerel.  Bring some Squid Spoons, Crappie Jigs, or cast net White Baits off  the pier and  grab some Shiners.

Free line Sabiki Rigs on the edge of the schools of bait.

Fishing On Anna Maria Island

The fishing report is in and excellent along the shores of Anna Maria Island.  I went out in search of some proof last week, and started at the Anna Maria City Pier.  There were about a dozen people standing at the end of both the Rod & Reel Pier and the Anna Maria City Pier with poles in hand waiting to catch the next big fish.  I spoke with a couple of local fisherman and people in the bait shops to get the scoop.
