Anna Maria Island Night Sky Event

First for the evening you’ll enjoy the winter full moon, also called a Snow Moon. Around 5:30pm the moon will creep over the horizon into view. As it comes up the moon will start to enter into the Earth’s penumbral or outer shadow and turn a dim gray color. East Coast viewers will start to notice the lunar eclipse around 6:15pm. Just before 10pm the eclipse will be over, but the show doesn’t stop there.

Next you’ll have the opportunity to see Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusáková starting at about 10:30 when it’s closest to Earth. This pale green Comet will require a telescope or even a pair of binoculars to view. Look to the East-Northeast near the constellation Hercules.
